The college application process can often seem like such an enormous undertaking that it can feel insurmountable. Breaking down the process into manageable steps helps streamline the process and make it feel less overwhelming. Rather than feeling like you need to take on the whole project, smaller steps help make forward progress feel achievable. With each step completed you feel accomplished...and you are closer to your goal. It's a win-win.

Create a Timeline

A well-structured timeline can help you stay organized and ensure you meet all deadlines. Here’s a simple guideline for small, achievable steps:

  • 8th-10th Grade: Look at the courses offered by your high school. What is the progression of classes in each subject area? What class do you need to start with to achieve the progression/level of course you want to complete by the end of your high school career? Make sure to choose classes early on that set you on the path to be able to register for higher level classes in 11th and 12th grade. Enroll in the PSAT to gain experience with standardized tests and practice taking exams in that environment. This is also a good time to explore new or different extracurricular activities and consider summer programs that align with your areas of interest.

  • 11th Grade: This is the year the college application preparations really kick into gear.

Extracurriculars and Academics: Continue to build on the foundation you started in the first half of your high school career.

Create a College List: Start thinking about what you are looking for in a college community.

Standardize Tests: Sign up to take the SAT/ACT. While many colleges have switched to test optional, it is important to take the test in case it is required by a school on your college list.

Letters of Recommendation: Consider who you would like to write your letters of recommendation and talk with them ahead of time.

  • Summer Before 12th Grade:

Create Common App Account: Get the basic information entered and familiarize yourself with the application interface

Essays: Begin writing application essays, with your primary focus on the Personal Statement.

  • 12th Grade:

Finalize Your College List: Ensure you have a balanced list with a mix of target, safety, and reach schools. Check all the application deadlines for each school and ensure you know when your application needs to be submitted.

Letters of Recommendation: Remind your writers about the letters of recommendation and provide them with a list of activities, interests, and academic achievements.

Essays: Finalize your Personal Statement and all supplemental essays. Set a timeline to complete all supplemental essays leaving more than enough time for each to be proofread by another person.

Application Submission: Decide where you want to apply Early Action, Early Decision, and Regular Decision. Have your application ready to go before the deadline. Don't submit at the very last minute; it creates undue stress.

Academics: Continue to enroll in rigorous classes and keep you grades up. Some colleges will ask to see senior year grades, and in some cases acceptance is contingent on your grades remaining at the same level (or higher) than you have demonstrated throughout your high school career.

Conclusion

The college application process should be exciting and full of anticipation, not full of stress and anxiety. Entering the journey well-prepared, anticipating what is to come, will help track progression and allow you to celebrate achievable successes. Remember, this is not just about getting accepted; it’s about finding the right fit for your future. Take a deep breath, stay positive, and embrace this exciting journey ahead.
